Abstract

Following widespread closures of food-related businesses due to efforts to curtail the spread of SARS-CoV-2, public health authorities reported increased sightings of rats in close vicinity of people. Because rats vector a number of pathogens transmissible to people, changes in their behavior has consequences for human health risks. To determine the extent of how stay-at-home measures influenced patterns of rat sightings we: 1) examined the number of rat-related public service requests before and during the period of lockdown in New York City (NYC) and Tokyo, Japan; 2) examined reports made in proximity to closed food service establishments in NYC; and 3) surveyed pest control companies in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Poland. During the month following lockdown, the overall number of reports decreased by 30% in NYC, while increasing 24% in Tokyo. However, new hotspots of 311 calls were observed in proximity of closed food service establishments in NYC; and there was a consistent positive association between kernel density estimates of food service establishments and location of 311 calls (r = 0.33 to 0.45). Similarly, more reports were observed in the restaurant-dense eastern side of Tokyo. Changes in clientele for pest control companies varied geographically, with 37% of pest-management companies surveyed in North America reporting 50-100% of their post-lockdown rat-related requests coming from new clients. In Warsaw, where there are no clusters of restaurants in densely-populated areas, there were no changes. In Tokyo, there were no changes in clients. We conclude that changes in public service calls are region-specific and localized, with increases in rat sightings more likely near restaurant-dense regions. Pest control companies surveyed in North America either lost much of their business or shifted clientele from old to new locations. We discuss possible mitigation measures including ramping up pest control during re-opening of food-related establishments and the need for citywide rodent surveillance and disease monitoring.

A jury in San Francisco convicted Russian citizen Yevgeny Nikulin after a series of hacks and cyberthefts eight years ago that targeted major U.S. social-media companies such as LinkedIn and Dropbox.
The District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday said Nikulin would be sentenced September 29.
Nikulin, 32, faces up to 10 years in prison for each count of selling stolen usernames and passwords, installing malware on protected computers, as well as up to five years for each count of conspiracy and computer hacking.
According to U.S. prosecutors, Nikulin in 2012 stole the usernames and passwords of tens of millions of social media users to access their accounts. Some of that data was put up for sale on a Russian hacker forum.
Nikulin, who last year was examined by court-ordered psychologists amid concerns about his mental health, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His lawyer, Arkady Bukh, vowed to appeal the verdict, which he called a huge injustice.
Nikulin was detained in the Czech Republic in October 2016 and extradited to the U.S. 17 months later.
The move angered Moscow, which had asked Czech authorities to extradite Nikulin to his home country, citing him as a suspect in a $2,000 online theft in 2009.
Nikulin's trial started in California in early March but was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic a week later, when nearly all in-person court hearings were postponed across the United States.

Like a rubber ball bouncing down a hardwood hallway, COVID-19 continues to spread  across the USA, hitting some neighborhoods hard while touching other parts of the same metro area only lightly, according to a USA TODAY analysis of ZIP code-level data.
The analysis shows neighborhoods with the highest rates of infection from the deadly virus are more densely populated, and they have lower household incomes and higher percentages of nonwhite residents.
USA TODAYs exclusive analysis draws from reported cases of COVID-19 by ZIP code of residence of those testing positive for the virus. It affirms a set of trends revealed by case counts available in April, when far fewer jurisdictions reported such data.
Overall, data for more than 8,500 ZIP codes about 26% of all U.S. ZIPs was collected during the week of June 15 from 49 state, county and local health departments that publish data at that geographic level. Although far from comprehensive, the reports include slices from every U.S. census region.
USA TODAY matched the ZIP code data with 2018 U.S. census demographic data to examine income, race and population disparities in neighborhoods with varying infection rates.
The map and charts below show how unevenly the virus has spread across communities and neighborhoods since the first case was reported in January.
INCOME:  The analysis shows that COVID-19 is more prevalent in poorer neighborhoods. In ZIP codes where median household income is less than $35,000, the overall infection rate is more than twice as high as in neighborhoods with household income of more than $75,000.
RACE:  In neighborhoods with a majority of nonwhite residents, the overall COVID-19 infection rate is nearly five times higher than in areas where nonwhite population is less than 10%.
CROWDED CONDITIONS:  Overall infection rates were twice as high in neighborhoods with the most people and housing per square mile, where its more challenging to practice social isolation and distancing. A major differentiator for high case rates: population density of more than 1,000 residents per square mile.

What a second wave of coronavirus could look like
When will it hit and what will it look like? Those are just a few unanswered questions about a possible second wave of COVID-19.

CHICAGO More and more young adults are testing positive for coronavirus in Chicago, the citys top doctor said Friday.
Chicago is seeing a rise in the number of people age 18-29 who are testing positive for COVID-19, Dr. Allison Arwady, head of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said during a Friday call with reporters.
That age group now makes up most of the citys new cases of coronavirus.
The city has seen more gatherings among younger people, Arwady said, which could be fueling the rise in cases. And theres been a fair bit of spread in informal settings, like people gathering for house parties or going to businesses where requirements like social distancing arent well-enforced, she said.
I think young Chicagoans, like all Chicagoans, are getting a little bit of COVID fatigue and may be being less careful about practicing diligent mask wearing and being careful, Arwady said.
Late last week, Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed to crack down on bars and other businesses that arent following rules for keeping people safe amid the pandemic. That came after Block Club reported on bars reopening in Wrigleyville, where large crowds of young people drank and gathered on the sidewalks and at some establishments without wearing masks or practicing social distancing.
The increase in infections among young adults is particularly prominent in the New City and Lincoln Park community areas, Arwady said.
A map from the department shows where that age group is seeing more cases:
While the citys overall percent positivity is 4.8 percent, people age 18-29 have a percent positivity of 6 percent, Arwady said. That measures the percent of people who came back positive for coronavirus when taking a test.
The rise of confirmed cases among young people is partly due to the fact the city is doing a lot of testing in people that age, Arwady said.
Its also because the city is doing a very nice job of controlling the cases in people who are older and more at risk of severe complications from COVID-19, Arwady said.
But officials are worried young people could transmit the virus to older people, leading to a surge in cases among the elderly, Arwady said.
I want to make sure that we are reminding younger Chicagoans that their behavior also can put people they love at risk who may be at higher risk of [a negative] outcome, Arwady said.
People should continue to practice safety measures to keep Chicagos outbreak under control, Arwady said. Shes long encouraged Chicagoans to wear masks, practice social distancing and wash their hands.
The biggest predictor of our longterm success is whether people continue to practice the behaviors that we know work, Arwady said.
Despite the rise of coronavirus among young people, Chicago overall is doing well, Arwady said.
