'Circulating air' may have spread COVID-19 to 1,500 German meat plant staff

Experts fear COVID-19 can be spread inside facilities like the Toennies meat plant in Guetersloh because of the systems they use to pump out cool, moist air inside enclosed rooms.
Martin Exner, director of the Institute for Hygiene and Public Health at the University of Bonn, said: "What has not been known so far is that under such conditions circulating air can keep an aerosol moving.
"And that this is another risk factor that has been overlooked so far. That is the crucial message I have to report here now."
Mr Exner said outbreaks at meat plants in Germany, the US, Britain and France showed the need to reconsider how such factories are set up.
"I think this will have a lot of consequences for the meat processing and poultry processing industry," he said.
Meanwhile authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, have faced criticism over their handling of the outbreak at the slaughterhouse
Lockdown measures have been reimposed in Guetersloh and neighbouring Warendorf, which are home to 670,000 inhabitants.
But critics argue governor Armin Laschet should have acted sooner.
Centre-left opposition leader Thomas Kutschaty said: "Today, Rheda-Wiedenbrueck is the biggest hotspot in the whole of Europe.
"The state could have used a government that intervened quickly and decisively, and didn't wait a week to prevent a second wave of infections rolling over all of Germany and Europe.
"Now we can only hope that it is not already too late."
Mr Laschet, who is also a contender for the leadership of chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right party - and possibly to succeed her as Germany's leader - has been a vocal advocate of easing coronavirus restrictions.
Abour 600 tests have been carried out in the region on people who did not work at the slaughterhouse.
And of the 230 results already received, 229 were negative and in the remaining case the result was unclear.
Sven-Georg Adenauer, the head of the regional administration in Guetersloh, said the results provided "a small glimmer of hope that the virus hasn't passed into the population".

Undetected cases

The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has now become pandemic. How has it managed to spread from China to all around the world within 3 to 4 months? Li et al. used multiple sources to infer the proportion of early infections that went undetected and their contribution to virus spread. The researchers combined data from Tencent, one of the world's largest social media and technology companies, with a networked dynamic metapopulation model and Bayesian inference to analyze early spread within China. They estimate that 86% of cases were undocumented before travel restrictions were put in place. Before travel restriction and personal isolation were implemented, the transmission rate of undocumented infections was a little more than half that of the known cases. However, because of their greater numbers, undocumented infections were the source for 80% of the documented cases. Immediately after travel restrictions were imposed, 65% of cases were documented. These findings help to explain the lightning-fast spread of this virus around the world.
Science, this issue p. 489

Abstract

Estimation of the prevalence and contagiousness of undocumented novel coronavirus [severe acute respiratory syndromecoronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)] infections is critical for understanding the overall prevalence and pandemic potential of this disease. Here, we use observations of reported infection within China, in conjunction with mobility data, a networked dynamic metapopulation model, and Bayesian inference, to infer critical epidemiological characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2, including the fraction of undocumented infections and their contagiousness. We estimate that 86% of all infections were undocumented [95% credible interval (CI): 8290%] before the 23 January 2020 travel restrictions. The transmission rate of undocumented infections per person was 55% the transmission rate of documented infections (95% CI: 4662%), yet, because of their greater numbers, undocumented infections were the source of 79% of the documented cases. These findings explain the rapid geographic spread of SARS-CoV-2 and indicate that containment of this virus will be particularly challenging.
10:29 AM 6/24/2020 - Early community spread of SARS-CoV-2 in New York City - M.N.: It means that the "natural" (or the un-natural, induced), preexisting reservoir of the Sars-Cov-2 Infection (and very likely, the CO-INFECTIONS), possibly with the Huntavirus and others) were most likely present before the importations of the first cases from Europe.

Early community spread of SARS-CoV-2 in New York City - GS

- M.N.: It means that the "natural" (or the un-natural, induced), preexisting reservoirs of the Sars-Cov-2 Infection (and very likely, the CO-INFECTIONS), possibly with the Huntavirus and others) were most likely present before the importations of the first cases from Europe.

It also indicates that the City Rodents were the likely vectors of these Infections, as they quite often historically are during the Pandemics. It is also possible and likely that this vectors were manipulated and controlled as the part of the mechanism of the regulated Bio-weapon. The same or similar notions might apply to the other big world cities and the other locations. The sudden proliferation of rats, especially the unusually large ones (water or river rats, nutrias, bamboo rats), appears to be the common phenomenon, and it is possible that they were deliberately infected, and their populations were intentionally amplified and/or introduced into the novel urban habitats.

It is possible that these infected rodents were released into the cities to inhabit and to obstruct the sewer pipes system when they grow. All this has to be carefully investigated and researched, of course.

The notion of the sustained preexisting community transmission of the Sars-Cov-2 corresponds with the recently reported results of the study that "suggest a conceptual model for the COVID-19 epidemic in the US characterized by rapid spread across the US with over 80% infected patients remaining undetected."

By now we should accept the evidence, that this Pandemic started, became manifest earlier than initially estimated: at the end of Summer - beginning of Fall of the 2019, and it was seeded: introduced, most likely as the planned and the very well thought through (which is the very much a German style) Intelligence Operation in 2014 - 2016, and was conceived even earlier, in the 2000-s, after the 9/11.
