In 2013, Zheng-Li Shi, the bat woman, and her team from the Wuhan Institute of Virology were asked to investigate the virus profile of a mine shaft in Yunnan Province after six miners contracted pneumonia with symptoms similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). After sampling the mine shaft for a year, the researchers identified a diverse group of bat coronaviruses, one of which was designated RaBtCoV/4991 (GenBank KP876546) and partially sequenced as a 440-base pair fragment targeting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene (RdRp). Despite being  unique enough to be considered a new strain and associated with a human SARS-like outbreak as a Potential Pandemic Pathogen, thereafter, RaBtCoV/4991 disappeared from the scientific literature. That is, until 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an intensive search for the origin of the coronavirus responsible, SARS-CoV-2. In the February 3, 2020 Nature article, scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, led by Zheng-Li Shi, stated that the coronavirus RaTG13, isolated from bats in Yunnan Province, China, showed a 96.2% sequence identity with SARS-CoV-2 and, therefore, RaTG13 is the closest relative forming a distinct lineage from other coronaviruses and supporting Chinas claim that SARS-CoV-2 is naturally-occurring. A month later, on March 17, 2020, the article The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2, widely-cited by scientists and the media, supported the conclusion that RaTG13 is SARS-CoV-2s closest relative, which likely jumped from animals to humans in the Wuhan Seafood Market. It is important to note that, Ian Lipkin, one of the authors of The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2, the article supporting Chinas claim that SARS-CoV-2 is naturally occurring, received a medal from the Chinese government in January, 2020. It did not take long for doubts to appear about the validity of the RaTG13 argument or even its existence . We have now learned that RaTG13 existed only on paper. RaTG13 and RaBtCoV/4991 are the same virus. The entire RaTG13 genome was first uploaded to the National Institutes of Health GenBank on January 27, 2020 and updated on March 24, 2020. In those filings, there is no mention of RaBtCoV/4991. Yet, in a Chinese virus database, dated March 7, 2020 in the source code, RaTG13 and RaBtCoV/4991 are listed as being the same virus. It means that China knew early on that RaTG13 was not a unique coronavirus, but merely a duplicate of RaBtCoV/4991 and kept that important fact secret. China has long implied that RaTG13 was only discovered in 2020 after the onset of the pandemic via a search of its coronavirus database. That claim was echoed by Peter Daszak, President of the EcoHealth Alliance and long-time collaborator of the Wuhan Institute of Virology: We found the closest relative to the current SARS-CoV-2 in a bat in China in 2013. We sequenced a bit of the genome, and then it went in the freezer; because it didnt look like SARS. Now comes yet another stunning revelation. It was not in the freezer. According to new information, Chinese scientists experimented with RaTG13 during 2017 and 2018. The evidence clearly shows that, not only did China lie in a major way about the origin of COVID-19, but that it is, without question, due to a man-made virus. China lied, people died. With the alarming growth in cases of COVID-19, the bid to find the origin of the coronavirus has gone quiet. US President Donald Trump launched another scathing attack on China in his speech on the nations 244th Independence Day. Chinas secrecy, deceptions, and cover-ups allowed it to spread all over the world and China must be held fully accountable, Trump said. However, Dr Tom Jefferson, senior associate tutor at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM), at Oxford University, UK, tells the Telegraph that there is growing evidence that the virus was elsewhere before it emerged in Asia. Spanish virologists announced last week they had found traces of the disease in samples of waste water collected in March last year, nine months before the coronavirus disease was publicly seen in China. Italian scientists also found evidence of coronavirus in sewage samples in Milan and Turin, in mid-December, many weeks before the first case was detected, while experts have found traces in Brazil in November last year. Dr Jefferson writes that many viruses lie dormant across the world and emerge when conditions are favourable. They can vanish as quickly as they arrive under such a scenario. Where did Sars 1 go? Its just disappeared, he said So we have to think about these things. We need to start researching the ecology of the virus, understanding how it originates and mutates. There was a case in the Falkland Islands in early February. Now where did that come from? There was a cruise ship that went from South Georgia to Buenos Aires, and the passengers were screened and then on day eight, when they started sailing towards the Weddell Sea, they got the first case. Was it in prepared food that was defrosted and activated? Strange things like this happened with Spanish Flu. In 1918 around 30% of the population of Western Samoa died of Spanish Flu, and they hadnt had any communication with the outside world. The explanation for this could only be that these agents dont come or go anywhere. They are always here and something ignites them, maybe human density or environmental conditions, and this is what we should be looking for. Dr Jefferson is of the belief that the virus may be spread through the sewage system or shared toilet facilities, not just through droplets expelled by talking, coughing and sneezing. Dr Jefferson and Professor Carl Henegehan, Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, called for an in-depth investigation similar to that carried out by John Snow in 1854, which showed cholera was spreading in London from an infected well in Soho. Wondering why so many COVID-19 outbreaks happen at food factories and meatpacking plants? Dr Jefferson and Professor Henegehan believe it may be because of shared toilet facilities coupled with cool conditions that allow the coronavirus to live. Were doing a living review, extracting environmental conditions, the ecology of these viruses which has been grossly understudied, said Dr Jefferson. There is quite a lot of evidence that huge amounts of the virus is in sewage all over the place, and an increasing amount of evidence suggests there is faecal transmission. There is a high concentration where sewage is four degrees, which is the ideal temperature for it to be stabled and presumably activated. And meatpacking plants are often at four degrees. These meat packing clusters and isolated outbreaks dont fit with respiratory theory, they fit with people who havent washed their hands properly. These outbreaks need to be investigated properly with people on the ground one by one. You need to do what John Snow did. You question people, and you start constructing hypotheses that fit the facts, not the other way around.
